Sometimes it’s not the actual transition we’re avoiding, but the process it takes to make the change. Here are eight basic steps to begin.
Step One:
Know where you’re going, confirm all details, dates, expenses and documents required for this new location. Decide the date on which you want to be settled into the next chapter. Know you’ll get there.
Step Two:
Go over these dates with your agent, and flesh out a tentative schedule. Make sure you’re clear on the probable and possible cost and length of time services will take. Define a goal date, and outline a schedule backward from there.
Step Three:
Find estimates and availability for:
- Moving Co.
- Storage Co.
- Organizing Co.
- Handy Man
Step Four:
Book and confirm - organizers, movers, haulers, cleaners, handymen, and general assistance.
Step Five:
Go over contracts for painting and staging, sign, and put them on calendar.
Step Six:
Declutter. This means letting go of all clothes, furniture, and miscellaneous items that have served their purpose, or could be used by someone else. Be honest. Let go. Make space for what’s ahead.
Step Seven:
Packing Day. Moving Day.
Step Eight:
Know this - Life happens in chapters. Memories are indelible. Time is precious and things make sense when you get there.
